Text Box: Charlottesville can be a very expensive place to do nonprofit work. Space is at a premium even for very old houses and renovation costs can mount in a hurry. Local institutions and businesses are well aware of that challenge and have joined to help us meet it. Thanks to three local organizations – the Perry Foundation, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Community Foundation and the Houff Foundation, we have been able to roughly double our workspace in Charlottesville.
When People Places of Charlottesville opened its doors in 1996, our 1002 East Jefferson office area seemed virtually limitless. As the program grew and added services, limitless turned first to limited, then to limiting. Stacking desks vertically wasn’t really an option. That’s when we turned to our local Foundations and business friends for help. In 2003, they came through in a very big way. With their generous aid - we were able by year’s end to cover the bulk of the renovation costs for our new 922 East Jefferson house.
We also are very fortunate to have been selected last year by the award-winning local architectural firm of VMDO Architects as their “pet project”. VMDO staff helped clear our backyard space at 922 this fall and are working on design plans to transform the area into a multi-use recreation, reflection and gathering space for our youth.
We now have room for a growing program – for group work, our Summer Training Program (STP), individual counseling, parent training, and for Family Consultant and support staff. There’s even a desk at 922 for our Executive Director.
Many thanks to the good people at Houff Transfer, VMDO, the Perry Foundation and the Charlottesville-Albemarle Community Foundation for showing us that helpers can find help too.
