Pygmalion School in Staunton, Virginia, is a small private Special Education day school authorized by the Virginia Board of Education to serve students from grade one through eight who have been identified as Emotionally Disturbed and who may have a secondary disability of Learning Disabled or Mentally Handicapped/Impaired.
Pygmalion was established in 1976 to offer a highly individualized educational program for children placed in our treatment foster care program and unable to function successfully in a public school setting.
In recent years, Pygmalion has become a resource for students from local school systems whose behavior has become more challenging than can be effectively addressed in larger school environments. Pygmalion seeks to create a structured and supportive environment where children can feel safe, successful and confident of their capacity to learn. Ultimately our goal for all students is a successful transition back to public school or to another appropriate educational program.
Pygmalion is staffed by certified special education teachers and a behavior technician all of whom have extensive experience with troubled children. Teaching assistants are hired as needed to provide additional one-to-one help to students requiring more intensive monitoring and support. Student teachers, volunteers and practicum students from area colleges provide additional resources.
Pygmalion serves 16 students, with two separate classrooms to accommodate older and younger groups. Pygmalion follows the Augusta County School calendar from August to June. School hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
If you know of a client that would benefit from a highly individualized educational program, please contact your local People Places office and ask to speak with an admissions coordinator. To learn more about the referral process visit our Refer A Child page.
